Murder, surveillance and trolling - 2016 was not a good year for human rights defenders. According to Amnesty International (AI), it was a year of unparalleled global assault, clampdowns on civil society and rampant use of surveillance. 281 people were killed for defending human rights - up from 156 the year before.
