Back from the brink
April 30, 2011As the Bundesliga season winds down, the teams at the bottom of the table fought it out on Friday. Visiting Wolfsburg beat Werder Bremen 1-0, boosting their chances of Bundesliga survival with a bump out of the relegation zone to 14th place with 32 points.
Sascha Riether tapped in the winner from close range midway through the first half, turning in the rebound after Bremen's keeper Tim Wiese blocked a shot by Cicero.
Bremen dropped to 12th place on 38 points.
In the day's other match, Kaiserslautern beat visitors St. Pauli 2-0. Christian Tiffert and Matthias Abel headed in the two goals for Kaiserslautern, which appeared to be safe after moving up to 11th in the standings with 40 points. In last place with 29 points and just two games left, St. Pauli looked doomed to relegation.
Mönchengladbach - ahead of St. Pauli on goal difference - are set to travel to Hanover 96 on Saturday. Meanwhile, at the top of the standings, Dortmund could clinch the title on Saturday if they beat Nuremberg and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen fail to win at Cologne.
