A must-win match
The Italy against Uruguay encounter was undoubtedly the day's marquee match. With Costa Rica already through, a win or draw would see Italy advance. Only victory would do for Uruguay.
Second-half drama
A scoreless first half left little to talk about. The drama unfolded in the second 45 minutes. First, it was a red card to Claudio Marchisio just before the hour-mark. Despite the setback, however, Italy looked likely to hold on for a draw.
Was that a bite?
Did he really do that again? With around 10 minutes left in regulation, Luis Suarez and Giorgio Chiellini went down in a heap. The Italian defender claimed he was bitten on the shoulder, and the replay indicated that might just have happened.
Little time to argue
There was little time for Italy to be angry about Suarez's hungry performance, however. Just a minute later, Uruguay took the lead through a header from defender Diego Godin.
Italy out, Uruguay through
From then on, it looked unlikely that 10-man Italy would get back into the match. Even with five minutes of stoppage time to help them, the Italians were unable to find an equalizer. It finished 1-0. Uruguay again advance under controversial circumstances, while midfield great Andrea Pirlo appears to have played his last World Cup game.
Costa Rica top group
While the drama unfolded between Uruguay and Italy, Costa Rica and England played to a tame 0-0 draw. The result means the surprise Costa Ricans finish top of the group after an excellent group stage.

Greece strike first in topsy-turvy game with Ivory Coast
Greece came into their clash against Ivory Coast knowing that only a win would send them through to the next round. Hellas drew first blood in minute 42 on a goal by substitute midfielder Andreas Samaris.
Ivory Coast grab an equalizer
Fifteen minutes from time, Wilfried Bony scored for Ivory Coast, making it 1-1. That result would have allowed the Elephants to progress to the round of 16. All the Africans had to do was defend for a quarter of an hour.
Samaras hands Greece the last-minute winner
The game turned in injury time. Giovanni Sio brought down Giogios Samaras. The striker himself stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty. The 2-1 win puts the Greeks through to the round of 16, where they will face Group D winners Costa Rica. Ivory Coast head home.
