Fresh data from Germany's statistics office for the first half of 2015 show an overall 3-percent rise in the number of nights to 193.7 million - a new record.

The number of nights spent by foreign tourists rose by 5 percent to 34.4million - also a new record. Germans also love to holiday in their own country - the number of nights spent by domestic tourists increased by 3 percent to 159.3 million.

Germans have been holidaying at home for years, enjoying good infrastructure as well as a variety of different destinations and price categories.

But foreign tourists have started to take a shine to Germany as well in recent years. "The 2006 Football World Cup in Germany has been a boon," DTV spokeswoman Sarah Lopau said.

"Germany's image has vastly improved since then," she added.

The statistics' offive report did not say which destinations are most popular, but, overall, German cities with more than 100,000 people have been particularly popular for years, according to an earlier press release from the German Tourism Board.
