Top 10 new museums around the world
2022 is the year of museum architecture, as new museums or extensions open around the globe. On June 11, the Norwegian National Museum has its turn. We present it here, along with other favorites.
Nasjonalmuseet, Norway
On June 11, 2022, the new Norwegian National Museum, Nasjonalmuseet, opens in Oslo. With more than 5,000 works, it will be the largest art museum in the Nordic region. The collection contains objects from different centuries, spanning design, architecture and the arts — including "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. It also holds the largest art library and archive in northern Europe.
Museum of the Future, Dubai
Dubai, which is not exactly short of superlatives, added a new highlight on February 22. The oval building is designed to resemble an eye through which visitors can take a look into the future. On seven floors, visitors can experience exhibitions on the topic of the future. They focus on artificial intelligence, space research, adaptation to climate change, and living in the future.
Musee de Cluny, France
The Musee de Cluny Middle Ages museum in Paris, located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, was closed for many years. In May, it reopened to the public. The exhibition was redesigned and a new entrance building was added. Built over the ruins of the former Roman thermal bath complex, it blends discreetly into the existing ensemble. It is entirely barrier-free.
Hong Kong Palace Museum, Hong Kong
After five years, the Hong Kong Palace Museum is expected to open in July 2022 in the new cultural district of West Kowloon on the waterfront of Victoria Harbour. Around 900 traditional Chinese exhibits, such as imperial treasures and rare books, will be displayed there — as well as multimedia projects. These will be presented in nine galleries covering 30,500 square meters (328,000 square feet).
Istanbul Modern, Turkey
After Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art opened on Istanbul's Karakoy waterfront in 2004, it was moved to another complex. Now it is to return the coast and will move into a building designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. It will also house a library, a design boutique, a cinema and event spaces.
Museum of Broadway, USA
A museum dedicated exclusively to the history of the New York theater industry is to open on Times Square in the summer of 2022. Videos and installations will make this vibrant history even more tangible. Also exciting is Miami's ReefLine, an underwater public sculpture park will open in the summer and is intended to promote biodiversity while attracting diving enthusiasts.
Grand Egyptian Museum, Egypt
Right next to the pyramids of Giza, a facade of glass and stone stretches for almost a kilometer (0.62 mi). Around 100,000 objects will be displayed, including artifacts from Tutankhamun's tomb, in the museum located on a plot of land measuring 480,000 square meters (5,200,000 sq ft). It will be the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. The opening is planned for November 22.
Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), India
The MAP is scheduled to open in Bengaluru, southern India, towards the end of the year. More than 18,000 works from the collection of businessman Abhishek Poddar are to be exhibited on five floors. In addition to textiles, sculptures and paintings, the museum will offer digital exhibitions on its website. There will also be an art and research library and a conservation facility.
Sydney Modern, Australia
To mark its 150th anniversary, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney will be expanded to include the Sydney Modern in December 2022. Green roofs, solar panels and the use of rainwater will make this one of Australia's most sustainable buildings. At the same time, the new gallery spaces will house works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Robot Science Museum, South Korea
The Robot Science Museum is due to open in the South Korean capital of Seoul at the end of 2022. It will be built with the help of robots and drones, while humans will merely monitor the process. The museum will focus on virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence and hologram technology.
