Three talking points: Bayern vs. Inter
July 21, 2015
Dynamic Douglas
Not everything Bayern Munich Sporting Director Matthias Sammer says is right, but when he said new-signing Douglas Costa was a player who could break through fortresses with his speed and technique, he was spot on. After impressing on the left against Valencia, Costa was nothing short of scary on the right against Inter. The 24-year-old was constantly taking on players, regularly evading them and delivering dangerous crosses. When Inter's defenders did get near him, he showed he was no pushover either. With Franck Ribery struggling, Costa's electric pace over the first two or three yards will solve a problem that was evident last season. Bundesliga defenders beware.
Tactical tease
Pep Guardiola's tactics change so often and are so variable that it would be foolish to suggest the ones used against Inter Milan in Shanghai were permanent. However, it was interesting to observe the roles Guardiola's charges were assigned:
A raft of changes were made in the second half, which affected the flow of the game but the set-up was roughly the same. David Alaba operated mainly at left back, with Philipp Lahm favored in the roaming midfield role. Xabi Alonso sat deeper, often dropping into the centre of defense, something which Joshua Kimmich also did in the second half. Thiago roamed as much as Lahm, but in a more offensive role. When Sebastian Rode came on, he and Hojbjerg interchanged positions. Mario Götze stuck to the role of a 10 more than Thomas Müller (see below), but took over offensive inspiration when Julian Green came on for Robert Lewandowski.
Free Müller?
Versatility is certainly one of the main reasons why Manchester United Head Coach Louis van Gaal is reportedly so keen on Thomas Müller. The 25-year-old started on the left wing against Inter Milan, then came over after five minutes to play on the right, shuffling Costa up the wing. It wasn't long before Müller was floating around the middle too. He was involved in almost every chance on goal, was a constant nuisance and nearly scored at the end of the first half. While he has played this role before, it is not a permanent spot for him. The combination of his battling spirit and technique leaves him a perfect fit for the role though. After all, why wouldn't you give the man who best uses space the chance to do so in a free role?
