The trial of alleged former death camp guard John Demjanjuk opens in Munich

Janine RabeNovember 30, 2009

Welcome Back. It may well be the last major Holocaust trial to take place. Proceedings against John Demjanyuk opened in the southern German city of Munich today. He is charged with assisting in the murder of almost 28 thousand Jews. If convicted the Ukrainian born Demyanjuk will be imprisoned for life. The Simon Wiesenthal Center alleges Demjauyuk pushed men, women and children into gas chambers at the Sobi-bor death camp in what is now Poland. In May this year, he lost his ten year battle against extradition from the United States - and was brought to Germany. His family claims he is not fit to stand trial. Jewish groups and victim's families say it is never too late for justice - and his case is a symbolic one.
