The street carnival in February marks the peak of the so-called "fifth season." Some places in Germany come to a standstill as Narren – or fools, the costumed revelers – organize their street parades and party all-day long.  

The main carnival hubs are Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz, but the Narren also take control in Munich and some Swabian regions. Those wishing to join the party should at least know a little about the traditions. How much of an expert are you?
