Olaf TostJuly 6, 2015

The Acropolis is dedicated to the patron goddess of the city. The powerful ancient city state named itself after Athena, the goddess of wisdom.

An ancient citadel with a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena has looked over the city of Athens since the 8th century B.C. The citadel is on a rocky outcrop at a height of 156 meters and consists of several buildings. The Parthenon, pictured here, is probably the best known part of the Acropolis. The discovery of pieces of pottery has proven that Athens was inhabited some 6,000 years ago.
