Ten years after the Kosovo war ethnic tensions between the Albanian majority and the Serb minority remain high

Janine RabeJune 10, 2009

It is ten years since the Kosovo war - and today is the tenth anniversary of the end of NATO's bombardment of Serbia and the deployment of KFOR troops. The anniversary has deep symbolic importance for the former Serbian province of Kosovo - which unilaterally declared independence in February 2008. It has since been recognised by 60 countries - including the US - and 22 of the 27 EU member states. But Serbia still strongly objects to the move - and has the backing of Russia. In many respects much progress has been made in Kosovo in the past decade. But ethnic tensions remain high, with no sign of reconcilation between the ethnic Albanian majority and the Serb minority.
