Speculation Continues Over Next National Soccer Coach
July 19, 2004Officially, the German Soccer Association (DFB) isn't talking about its list of candidates to fill Rudi Völler's job as coach of the German national team. But the DFB can't seem to stop the head of its coach-finding committee, Franz Beckenbauer, from dropping hints to hungry reporters. Following the committee's second meeting on Monday, Beckenbauer told the tabloid Bild Zeitung that Winnie Schäfer, the German-born coach of Cameroon's national side, is in the running. A DFB spokesman said it was not the organization's intention to give a blow-by-blow account of the decision-making process, and that an official announcement would be made only when the decision was final. Other candidate names making the rounds in the German press include Dutch trainer Guus Hiddink, and Danish national coach Morten Olsen.
