Lewis Hamilton will have to chase his fourth Formula One season championship from behind after blistering laps by Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen left Hamilton in third on the grid.

Vettel, who trails Hamilton by 66 points, edged Verstappen by 0.086 seconds on Saturday for pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix. It was the 50th pole in Formula One for the German.

"I am so happy," said Vettel, who took top spot with a record lap of one minute and 16.488 seconds. "We will attack all the way and see what we can do."

With a big lead over Vettel, Hamilton knows that he can win the title if he finishes fifth or better. He would be the first British four-time world champion if he seals victory.

"We're still on for the win and we'll see what happens with Max. I hope to have a battle with at least one of them," said the Mercedes man.

Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas qualified fourth.
