He won a vote on Tuesday in the Saxony state parliament. Tillich will be ruling in a center-right coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) under leader Holger Zastrow. Together, the two parties have 72 seats out of a total of 132 in the state parliament.

The Saxony coalition mirrors the new government coalition in Berlin after Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the Free Democrats won a majority in national polls on Sunday.

As Merkel did on national level, Tillich was able to end a "grand coalition" with the Social Democrats in Saxony.

Securing jobs

Tillich, 50, is expected to present his cabinet on Wednesday, when he and the new ministers are also to be sworn in. Securing and creating jobs was the new government's foremost task, Tillich said. The premier said he would give his very best for the people in his state: “I want to be a good state premier for Saxony.“
