Germany lost their first European Championship qualifier away from home in 33 attempts and their first ever against Poland on Tuesday night. Joachim Löw's men slumped to a 2-0 defeat in Warsaw - the place of their last overall defeat - in a week of surprising international results.

The hosts kept Germany at bay for much of the opening period, as Joachim Löw's men sought to outwit Poland with their patience. Thomas Müller was the first to test Wojciech Szczesny, but the aggressive nature of the Polish side prevented Germany from really testing the Arsenal goalkeeper.

Germany delivered a lot of crosses but weren't getting much reward. Poland's charges were organized and well positioned, and there seemed to be no way through for the World Champions. Shortly before the break though, it was Bellarabi who had the best chance of the half. The Leverkusen winger, who put in a superb display, flashed a low shot past the far post after being found at the back post by Mario Götze.

Milik breaks the deadlock

Bellarabi's chance ignited Germany and a flurry of chances followed. Thomas Müller, put through by Andre Schürrle, was pushed too wide to get his shot on target. Müller then header over before Bellarabi's cut back and shot was again saved by Szczesny.

Not long after the second half though, the hosts took the lead out of the blue. Lukasz Piszczek crossed superbly and Arkadiusz Milik flicked past a poorly placed Manuel Neuer to send the home fans into raptures.

Stunned into action, Germany made camp outside the edge of Poland's area in search of an equalizer and more. Götze and Schürrle saw efforts saved, before Müller set up Erik Durm. The Dortmund defender had space but he too couldn't find a way past the Polish goalkeeper.

Germany wasteful in front of goal

Götze then fed through Bellerabi, but his finish also lacked enough quality. Not long after, it was a top quality save from Szczesny that denied the Leverkusen winger once again. Löw turned to Julian Draxler and Lukas Podolski in search of an answer. It was the latter who came closest, smashing a stunning volley onto the bar with his first touch.

With Germany pressing forward, it was inevitable that Poland would have one or two chances on the break. With two minutes left, substitute Sebastian Mila scored one of them after Robert Lewandowski got the better of Erik Durm from a throw-in and passed for Mila to fire past Neuer.

The second goal ended Germany's already fading hopes of an equalizer, as Germany's night came to a disappointing end. Following successes in basketball, handball and volleyball over Germany, Poland can now add football to that list after a historic night in Warsaw saw them secure their first ever victory against Germany. For Löw and his men, this defeat is their first in 18 matches and their first as World Champions. Tuesday's home qualifier against Ireland now holds even more weight.
