Planet Berlin: Spanish appetizers with a clear conscience
A Spanish trio invented animal-free tapas for themselves and their clientele.
Vegan trio
The decision was spontaneous and instinctive: When a bar in Neukölln was looking for a new operator in 2015, the three friends quickly agreed to step in. In the meantime, they have already celebrated their four-year anniversary. The cozy bar is not only popular because of its friendly owners; but also due to the vegan range of tapas that perfectly complement the drinks.
Guilt free
Bar Alaska tapas are animal-free and hence eco friendly. This is no great challenge when it comes to vegetable-based tapas regulars such as the potato snack, patatas bravas. But things get more difficult with the aioli, the mayonnaise of the Mediterranean, which is made of egg yolk among other things. Bar Alaska dispenses with this ingredient.
Unique interior
A bar like Alaska is unique, even in Berlin. This is also due to the decor. Each piece of furniture is a one-off found at Berlin flea markets.
Political statements
The Spanish trio are not just jumping on a Berlin bandwagon with the vegan concept but are serious about animal welfare. On their Facebook page they call for donations for animal welfare organizations, or for help with finding homes for stray dogs. The Spaniards also point to their own animal welfare events, like a charity flea market to help endangered Australian koalas.
