It has been four decades since a military coup in Chile in which General Augusto Pinochet seized power from democratically elected president Salvador Allende and begun 18 years of dictatorial rule.
Between 1973 and 1990 the Pinochet regime sent thousands of Chileans to secret camps, where they were tortured and killed.
Though the regime was known for its persecution of artists and musicians, University of Manchester researcher Katia Chornik has now revealed harrowing details of how songs were used as a way to torment political prisoners.
