Patagonia - Environmental Protection versus Clean Energy

August 14, 2012

American conservationist Kristine Tompkins and her husband Douglas have bought 263,000 hectares of land from Argentinian farmers in order to create a national park. But Chile's energy sector wants to produce hydroelectricity on the same land. A consortium plans to build five dams and flood large areas of land to produce hydroelectric power. Kris and Doug Tompkins are battling against Chilean politicians and ranchers. In the past 20 years, the couple has created a total of 11 nature preserves in South America for about 250 million dollars. Selfless commitment or checkbook tourism?
