If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter according to UNEP. It takes lots of energy to produce food and when it breaks down in landfills, it releases methane. The US state of California is trying to do something about this by enacting a law designed to fight organic waste. The legal solution has some critics wondering if it's a little too ambitious though.
