Education for all

"Whether in industrialized or developing countries, or in the East or the West - culture and education are a key to peaceful coexistence for sustainable development and intercultural dialogue," said deputy director general of Deutsche Welle, Reinhard Hartstein. He was delivering a keynote speech at the opening of the 2012 Global Media Forum in Bonn on Monday.
At the same time, Hartstein said, for the people of any nation, education was "the key to positive economic development and prosperity - and as a result, global economic growth depends upon it."
The central issue of the forum is how the ideal of "education for all" can ever be achieved.
According to the UN children's charity UNICEF, 101 million children in the world have no opportunity to learn to read or write. Poverty and remoteness of their homes from schools are among the causes, both of which media can play a role in helping to address.
The annual, three-day Global Media Forum brings together journalists, politicians, economic experts and major NGOs and activists from around the world.
