The man was jogging on a trail in the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space in the US state of Colorado, when he described hearing something behind him. The mountain lion lunged at him when he turned around, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
The man sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries, with bites to the face and wrist. He was able to fight the animal off and and get himself to a local hospital.
"Mountain lion attacks are not common in Colorado and it is unfortunate that the lion’s hunting instincts were triggered by the runner," CPW area wildlife manager Ty Petersburg said.
"This could have had a very different outcome."
The lion has been taken to the CPW animal health lab for necropsy.
