February 14, 2012

Italian prosecutors have appealed to Italy's highest court to have the murder conviction of Amanda Knox and Raffeale Sollecito reinstated.

Knox, an American student, had been convicted of murdering her housemate, British student Meredith Kercher, in 2007 in the university city of Perugia. Knox was cleared of the murder in October.

Prosecutors Giovanni Galati and Giancarlo Costaiola said in their motion to appeal that the acquittal of Knox and her then boyfriend Sollecito was "contradictory and illogical." Galati said he was convinced the pair killed Kercher.

Knox and Sollecito had been sentenced to 26 and 25 years, respectively. They spent four years in Italian jails until their acquittal on appeal.

Knox returned to Seattle, her hometown, immediately after she was cleared. She can not be extradited back to Italy.

A high court decision is not expected until the end of the year.
