Bye bye Berlin?

April 19, 2010

Last season Hertha Berlin was in the running for the Bundesliga title. Now five points below the relegation drop zone and with three highly challenging games ahead of them, relegation seems all but certain.

The German capital is very near spending a season without their own Bundesliga soccer team after a 2-2 draw at Frankfurt kept them in last place and on the cusp of being relegated to the country’s second division.

Berlin first took the lead on 17 minutes with a goal from midfielder Gojko Kacar before Frankfurt's Uemit Korkmaz equalized on 37 minutes. Berlin striker Raffael brought his team back 42 minutes in, but Frankfurt had the final say with Marco Russ scoring on 63 minutes.

Hertha's final three games of the season make relegation all but certain: they meet Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen, the league's second- and fourth-placed teams respectively, before taking on current first-placed powerhouse Bayern Munich in the season's final match day on May 8.

Speaking to Sky Television after the game, Hertha coach Friedhelm Funkel said he was optimistic.

"Why should we not win against Schalke if we play like we did in the past weeks?" he posited. "We have the worst cards in our hands, but chances are still there. We will not give up."

Dortmund misses chance at third

Sunday's other game between home team Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim ended in a 1-1 draw.

Dortmund had a chance at moving up to third place in the league when Nelson Valdez of Paraguay scored in the 57th minute. But an own goal by defender Mats Hummels in the 89th minute tied the game to the end.

With 53 points, Dortmund now sits in fifth place. Bayern Munich remained on top Saturday after a whopping 7-0 win against Hanover, while second-placed Schalke beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1.
