Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel calls for a new strategic direction for NATO as the military alliance prepares to turn 60

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the NATO military alliance to develop a completely new strategic orientation to cope with future threats. Part of the new direction, she said, should be closer cooperation with the UN and other international organizations. Her comments came in an address to the German parliament today prior to the alliance summit next week marking its 60th anniversary.
