Germany to bid for Euro 2024
October 24, 2013The German Football Federation (DFB) has wasted little time in announcing its candidacy for the tournament, with a decision on a host not expected before 2017.
It would be the fourth major tournament to be hosted in Germany, following Euro 1988 in West Germany and the World Cups in 1974 and 2006.
"We believe we have a good chance," Niersbach told the DFB general assembly, attended by Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) President Michel Platini watching on.
"… Eighteen years after the unique experience of the 2006 World Cup, the time will be right for a new summer fairytale in Germany. The DFB last hosted a European championship in 1988. We believe we have a good chance as the DFB has always given an excellent account of itself to FIFA and UEFA when hosting major tournaments in the past."
France will host the next Euro championship, in 2016, with 13 countries across the continent the stage for the 2020 edition as part of the tournament's 60th anniversary.
The DFB does not expect its bid for the 2024 tournament to affect Munich's candidacy as a host city at Euro 2020.
