German Cup quarterfinals roundup
Bayern Munich avoid a shock result against second-division Heidenheim, but only just. Hamburg have Pierre-Michel Lasogga to thank after booking a first German Cup semifinal spot for a decade.
Schalke 0-2 Werder Bremen
Schalke's miserable season continued thanks to two brilliant second-half goals by Werder Bremen. After an uneventful first half, Guido Burgstaller hit the post before Bremen struck. Milot Rashica's superb long-range strike changed a game desperately in need of a goal, before Davy Klaassen perfectly diverted a cross to double Bremen's lead. Nuri Sahin's late red card spoilt the day for Bremen.
Bayern Munich 5-4 Heidenheim
In one of the great German Cup games ever, Bayern edged past their second-division opponents in a nine-goal thriller. Having taken the lead, Bayern saw Niklas Süle sent off and Heidenheim led 2-1 at the break. Bayern turned it around afterwards to lead 4-2 just after the hour mark, but Heidenheim scored two quick goals of their own to make it 4-4. A late Lewandowski penalty proved the winner.
Paderborn 0 - 2 Hamburg
Pierre-Michel Lasogga (pictured) fired promotion chasing Hamburg in to the last four of the DFB Pokal for the first time in a decade to kick off the quarterfinals on Tuesday night. After a scrappy opening half, the burly German forward rose highest to nod in a corner after the interval before slotting home a composed finish on 68 minute to secure the win.
Augsburg 1-2 RB Leipzig
A Marcel Halstenberg penalty in stoppage time at the end of extra time saw RB Leipzig book their place in the semifinal of the DFB Pokal for the first time. Timo Werner had put the Red Bull-backed side ahead in the second half only for Alfred Finnbogason to equalize with the last kick of normal time. But Michael Gregoritsch inexplicably raised his hand late on to concede the winning penalty.
