Freiburg

August 1, 2011

SC Freiburg finished ninth in the league last year, and would be thrilled to do that well in 2011-12.

Freiburg don't pretend to be anything but what they are: a good club from a small city that, in terms of recent history, has had one foot in the first and one foot in the second division. It took the club more than 90 years to get to the top flight, and they've developed a healthy sense of patience.

The club only had two coaches from 1991 to last year, meaning Robin Dutt's exit could have an earthquake-like effect. Then again, in that the club's only real goal is to stay up - if new boss Marcus Sorg can get that done he'll be hailed as a hero.

Fun fact: With room for just 24,000 spectators, SC Freiburg's Badenova Stadion is the smallest home ground in the league.
