Dortmund reach the quarterfinal
March 5, 2013Dortmund entered the match Tuesday already with an away goals advantage having drawn 2-2 in Donetsk. The hosts had never lost to a Ukrainian team in seven matches and not wanting to break their streak, it was almost all Dortmund from start to finish.
In the 31st minute, Dortmund broke the deadlock. It began with a well-executed pass from Ilkay Gündogan in to Mario Götze at the top of the area. The young Germany international rounded the box and fired on goal, but his effort was deflected for a corner. On the ensuing set piece, Götze's delivery found Felipe Santana, who leapt over the back of Yaroslav Rakitskiy to power an emphatic header into the top right corner of the net.
Just six minutes later, Marco Reus played a smart ball to Robert Lewandowski on the right wing. The Polish striker crossed to Götze in the center of the box, who's one-timed, one-the-run finish between two Shakhtar defenders made it 2-0.
Not 15 minutes after the restart, Jakub Blaszczykowski made it 3-0. In minute 59, the Polish winger passed to Gündogan at the top of the box. Gündogan's shot was spilled by Andriy Pyatov, and Blaszczykowski was there with the tap-in to capitalize on the error, putting what looked like an already-decided match even further out of reach.
Despite a comfortable lead, Dortmund continued to attack for the remainder of the match, with Reus in particular causing further troubles for the Shakhtar defense. But in the end, it finished 3-0 and Dortmund continued their perfect home record in the competition.
"It was an unbelievable game from us," said Dortmund Coach Jürgen Klopp after the match. "It was strong from the first until the last minute."
Dortmund's win means they have advanced to their first Champions League quarterfinal since 1998. They had previously reached three consecutive quarterfinals from 1996 to 1998, winning the competition in 1997.
