One bomb was detonated from a motorcycle near the Kandahar air base on Wednesday morning.

As people raced to attend to the victims a suicide bomber on foot detonated a second bomb.

At least 20 people were killed and around 50 injured in the two blasts.

"All casualties are civilians - not a single military person," provincial police chief General Abdul Raziq told the AFP news agency.

He said the bomb struck a parking lot used for trucks that supply the nearby base. A makeshift bazaar was also underway there.

Most of the victims were drivers, their assistants and workers, he said.
