Celebrities with strong views on Brexit
Will the UK general election on December 12 break the Brexit impasse? Many stars have taken an active stance since the 2016 referendum. Most recently, actor Hugh Grant even went door to door for the remain cause.
Hugh Grant: Going door to door for the EU
Some North London residents were in for a surprise when they opened the door to none other than actor Hugh Grant ahead of the UK's December 12 election. Staunchly pro-EU, Grant went door to door, encouraging voters to choose the Liberal Democrats in the upcoming general elections in the hopes that it will give the UK a chance to undo Brexit.
Elizabeth Hurley: Baring all for Brexit
The British actress and model often remembered for her role in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," boldly showed her pro-Brexit stance in 2016 by publishing a nude picture of herself covered only by a Union Jack patterned pillow. The 54-year-old star has been a vocal leave campaigner, blasting remainers in her column in the British weekly "The Spectator."
JK Rowling: The pro-remain author took on Twitter trolls
The English storyteller responsible for the Harry Potter series has not been afraid to speak out about her public stance on the Brexit decision. Her pro-remain stance and Tweets lambasting the decision to leave the EU have even lost her fans and followers, but they certainly have not stopped her from sharing her opinion.
John Cleese: Former funnyman serious about leaving
John Cleese, part of Britain's legendary Monty Python comedy troupe, is another Brexiteer. In May, he took to Twitter saying that London was "not really an English city anymore," seemingly criticizing its diversity. His fellow Monty Python comedian Terry Gilliam said he disagreed with his colleague's view during a radio interview in September — Brexit, after all, is no laughing matter.
Daniel Craig: Anti-Brexit Bond
Having played an international man of mystery for several years, it should come as no surprise that the Bond actor is no fan of borders. The James Bond actor has made no apologies for his strident anti-Brexit stance. He was seen on Instagram in a Vote Remain T-shirt made by his friend, prize-winning German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans.
Wolfgang Tillmans: More than t-shirts
Beyond designing pro-EU T-shirts for the 2016 Brexit referendum, the respected German photographer has been an active pro-EU campaigner. His "vote together" campaign for the EU elections in May 2019 disseminated sharable material in 24 languages, from images to self-printing posters to promote the EU. His installation at Photo London in May 2016 (pictured) featured this work.
Michael Caine: Brexit until the bitter end
Michael Caine, one of Britain's best-known actors, who recently starred in King of Thieves, has repeatedly told the media he still supports Brexit as he has since the referendum in 2016: "I'd rather be a poor master of my fate than having someone I don’t know making me rich by running it," he said on the "Today" show last year.
The Beckhams: The remaining celebrity couple
The former football player is pro-remain. David Beckham stated in 2016 that his fellow international teammates, such as Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, are what made Manchester United a top team. Victoria Beckham shared her pro-EU stance on Twitter the same year, saying the EU held "the future for her children where we are stronger together."
