The German parliament has approved the extension of the Bundeswehr's mission in Afghanistan till the end of 2009. It has also agreed to increase the number of troops there by 1000 - to a total of 4,500. Germany's initial mandate was to contribute to reconstruction efforts. But with the upsurge of violence, defence organisations say the troops are increasingly operating in a war situation.
