Robert Lewandowski beats Wolfsburg

On one of the most incredible nights in the history of German football, Robert Lewandowski came off the Bayern Munich bench and scored five times in nine emphatic minutes of goal-scoring brilliance. Wolfsburg had been looking solid and held a half-time lead before the Polish striker created history at the Allianz Arena.

The German Cup winners – who had never beaten Bayern Munich away from home – got off to the perfect start on Tuesday night. Julian Draxler's superb lobbed pass found Daniel Caligiuri, who smashed home past Manuel Neuer at his near-post to take the lead.

It was almost 2-0 to the visitors when some normal sweeper-keeping from the Bayern number one went horribly wrong. Caligiuri took the ball from Manuel Neuer on the halfway-line and Joshua Guilavogui shot from the same spot, only to hit the post. The home side needed changes at the break to turn the game around and what came in the second-half was something special.

A night for the ages

Javi Martinez entered the fray with Lewandowski for the start of the second-half and the home support was rewarded with an immediate impact. Arturo Vidal found Thomas Müller with a back-heel and the German then set-up his teammate Lewandowski to finish for his fourth goal of the season six minutes after the restart.

Less than a minute later and Bayern had the lead. Douglas Costa headed forward from Benaglio's long-ball and sent through Lewandowski, who turned and smashed past the Swiss goalkeeper from 25 yards. His second of the night, but not his last.

Three minutes later and Lewandowski completed the fastest hat-trick in Bundesliga history. It was a scrappy goal with first the post saving Wolfsburg, then Benaglio blocking the follow-up from the Polish forward, who didn't give up until he finally hit the back of the net. The fun was far from over, though, for Lewandowski.

Another two minutes passed and we had another goal. Douglas Costa again the architect, as he beat Christian Träsch on the wing before crossing to the unmarked Lewandowski. A simple half-volley gave him his fourth goal in six minutes. Everyone inside the Allianz Arena was in complete shock, including Bayern head coach Pep Guardiola, who was only able to shake his head.

After an hour Lewandowski secured his place in history by scoring his fifth, becoming the first player to notch up five goals in a Bundesliga match since 1991 and the first ever as a substitute. It was the best of the bunch; as Mario Götze's cross drifted behind him, Lewandowski swiveled magnificently to volley home with his back to goal.

If it hadn't been for a dramatic clearance off the line from Ricardo Rodriguez, Lewandowski would have become only the second player to score six goals in a Bundesliga match. But it was a night that won't be forgotten in European football for a long, long time, as Robert Lewandowski took Bayern back to the top of the Bundesliga.

Darmstadt and Hertha win at home, Hamburg snatch it late

In the three other games in the Bundesliga on Tuesday night Darmstadt and Hertha Berlin secured home wins, whilst Hamburg stole a late victory away at Ingolstadt. It was a night of nostalgia for two Bundesliga strikers, as goals from Sandro Wagner and Vedad Ibisevic secured both home victories.

Wagner's brace came after Aaron Johannsson had given Werder Bremen an early lead. Ibisevic's double – his first goals in 1,417 minutes of action – secured Hertha its first home win of the season. Michael Gregoritsch was the hero for Hamburg, as he scored three minutes from time with a stunning free-kick to secure the win at Ingolstadt, taking HSV into sixth place in the Bundesliga.
