Biohut — a safe harbor for small fish
Our seas contain less and less fish, a fact that Ecocean does not want to accept. According to the company, the solution is its Biohut, a nursery for young marine life.
Repopulating the seas
At the edge of La Ciotat, a port on the French Mediterranean coast, divers lift a large white net off of the ground. Underneath, they unwrap a cage from which hundreds of baby fish are released into open water.
Rearing under the net
This cage covered with the net is called a "Biohut." It is made of a wire mesh that provides a safe haven for small fish, it offers them shelter and protection from enemies.
Nursery
The young fish here making their way into the Mediterranean are young groupers, dragon heads, sea bass, red marsh and graylows.
Simple concept
The concept of "Biohuts" was developed by a French company called Ecocean. The cages are meant to be placed in areas with tiny fish population, such as ports, to provide new life.
Worldwide use
Ecocean operates in other French ports too but also in Baltimore (USA), the Netherlands, Denmark, South Korea and Jordan.
The future
"Nature conservation is no longer enough, it is necessary to 'repair' the ecosystem and 're-populate' the sea," says Gilles Lecaillon, founder, and CEO of Ecocean, who aims for nothing less than "recapturing" the sea.
