Group Lead
December 11, 2008Ribery was involved in all three of Bayern Munich's goals on Wednesday, Dec. 10, scoring the second himself in the 34th minute with fighting play down the left flank.
Miroslav Klose had put his team ahead in the 11th minute, raising his personal total to 21 career strikes in Europe and five in the competition this season.
Klose followed up Ribery's score three minutes later, assisted with a pass from the Frenchman, with a faulty hit at the far post that bounced over goalie Hugo Lloris' head and into the net.
Up 3-0 in the first half, Bayern Munich's over-confidence led them to concede twice to the French. Lyon charged forward with goals from Sidney Govou in the 52nd and Karim Benzema in the 68th, but that wasn't enough to recapture the win.
Despite his team's strong final standing, coach Juergen Klinsmann said the result could have been better.
"I think we missed out on our opportunities of making it 4-0 and then mentally relaxed a bit," he told Canal Plus television. "We made two mistakes and I think it was down to a lack of concentration. You can't do that against such a good side as Lyon."
Bayern Munich finish the round with 14 points, three ahead of Lyon.
Other games
Also on Wednesday, Real Madrid powered to a 3-0 win over Zenit St. Petersburg under new coach Juande Ramos. European champions Manchester United were meanwhile held 2-2 by Danish visitors Aalborg, while Fiorentina and Dynamo Kiev clinched wins to go into the UEFA Cup.
Real's convincing win, a day after Ramos was appointed to replace the sacked Bernd Schuster, was not enough to overtake Juventus at the top of Group H where the Serie A side played out a goalless draw at BATE Borisov.
Porto downed Arsenal 2-0, ensuring they both finished group winners and Spain's Villareal slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Scotland's Celtic.
