Victory for Bayern
August 20, 2010Bayern Munich took advantage of an injury time goal to get their Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start, with a 2-1 victory against VfL Wolfsburg on Friday night.
In front of a 69,000 fans at the Bayern's Allianz Arena in Munich, Thomas Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger scored for the home side, while Edin Dzeko temporarily leveled the score for Wolfsburg just after halftime.
Bayern got off to a better start in the match-up between the two last Bundesliga champions and were ahead after just nine minutes, after World Cup top scorer Thomas Mueller netted a spectacular goal.
At half-time, Wolfsburg coach Steve McLaren brought on midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic. The substitution paid off, as the visitors took control of the match. In the 55th minute, Wolfsburg's Dzeko evened the score.
Race to score
Both sides continued looking for a winning goal, but defending champions Bayern were faster, as Schweinsteiger found the winner a minute into injury time after a cross from Ribery.
Bayern's Argentine centre-back Martin Demichelis boycotted Friday's opening Bundesliga match after coach Louis van Gaal opted not to put him in the starting line-up.
Last year's runners-up Schalke play in Hamburg on Saturday, with Bayer Leverkusen at Borussia Dortmund on Sunday as the Bundesliga gets underway.
