Andre Schubert has been confirmed as the interim head coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach following the shock resignation of Lucien Favre.

The 57-year-old released a statement on Sunday evening after his side went down 1-0 at rivals Cologne, their fifth defeat in five league games - the worst start in the club's history. Despite the best attempts of sporting director Max Eberl and the board, Favre wasn't set to change his decision.

Eberl confirmed at a press conference at Borussia-Park that he was walking his dog late in the evening when Favre's agent contacted him about the decision. "Favre was concerned that he wouldn't find a solution for this difficult situation, but that concern is only human," the 42-year-old sporting director told reporters.

"I'm still thoroughly convinced that we could have had more success with Favre. We had some great years together," he added. Favre had made previous attempts to hand in his resignation in 2014 and in the summer, but Eberl was able to convince him to stay on.

There is no timescale on a new long term appointment, according to Eberl who described this situation as a 'transitional period' for the Foals. Finding a solution now was a challenge and Eberl ruled out any offer for Jürgen Klopp amid speculation in German newspapers. "We have no plan B right now," he said.

Schubert is a highly-rated development coach with experience of training Germany's youth national teams for more than a decade. The Kassel-born coach has been in charge of the U15 national side for a year, while leading Gladbach's U23 team in the regional divisions this season.

Schubert will start work immediately with assistant coaches Frank Geideck und Manfred Stefes ahead of Wednesday's match against Augsburg.
