A senior ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel has stepped down as premier of the eastern German state of Thuringen in a move that could allow the Christian Democrats there to hold on to power, but in a coalition government. Dieter Althaus has been under pressure to resign following the CDU's poor showing in Sunday's regional election.
