Tsunami warning cancelled

US seismologists have cancelled a tsunami warning along the western coast of North America after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake off Alaska. The jolt was felt as far away as Seattle.

A US tsunami warning center based at Palmer in Alaska withdrew its warning for southern Alaska and coastal Canada on Saturday after officials had urged evacuations in low-lying areas.

The center said some areas had experienced small sea level changes, but there was no sign of widespread destructive wave front along the 1,125-kilometer stretch of coastline.

The earthquake had been located 100 kilometers (60 miles) off the Alaskan settlement of Port Alexander at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

Warning center scientist Bill Knight said there had been no reports of damage from the earthquake.

British Columbia was rattled by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 27. A tsunami warning was also issued at that time but no damage ensued.
