Tsunami warning cancelled
January 5, 2013A US tsunami warning center based at Palmer in Alaska withdrew its warning for southern Alaska and coastal Canada on Saturday after officials had urged evacuations in low-lying areas.
The center said some areas had experienced small sea level changes, but there was no sign of widespread destructive wave front along the 1,125-kilometer stretch of coastline.
The earthquake had been located 100 kilometers (60 miles) off the Alaskan settlement of Port Alexander at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
Warning center scientist Bill Knight said there had been no reports of damage from the earthquake.
British Columbia was rattled by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 27. A tsunami warning was also issued at that time but no damage ensued.
