A new German research station is being inaugurated in the Antarctic today. Neumayer three - as it is called - represents a radical departure from previous stations - largely because it has been built on stilts rather than underground. The new centre can accomodate up to 40 scientists. They go to antarctica to conduct vital research on everything from the environment to nuclear tests.
