A chronology of the anti-Muslim film protests

Across the Muslim world, protesters demonstrate against the anti-Islam movie "The Innocence of Muslims." The film was first shown in July 2012 and then in excerpts got available on the Internet sparking violent protests.

A 13 minute trailer of a feature length film "The Innocence of Muslims" is posted on Youtube.

Early September

Excerpts of the film aired on Egyptian television.

September 11

US Ambassador to Libya dies in Benghazi, Libya following an attack that killed three other US service members. Libyan officials have described it as an organized two-part operation by militants.

US Embassy in Cairo attacked, its compound breached, its flag torn down and burnt.

September 12

US President Barack Obama: “I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.”

Afghanistan bans Youtube to stop Afghans watching the film trailer.

September 13

In Egypt, 224 people injured in protests amid attack on US Embassy in Cairo.

In Yemen’s capital Sanaa, four people killed and 34 wounded in clashes in the area around the US embassy.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: “The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious belief of others…But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”

President of Egypt Mohammed Morsi said that Egyptians reject “unlawful acts” such as attacks on foreign embassies.

Google blocks Youtube video clips in Egypt and Libya.

September 14

Following Friday prayers, large-scale protests from Tunisia to Indonesia.

10,000 people protest in Khartoum, Sudan outside British and German embassy. Some protestors forced their way inside the German embassy and set it on fire.

One protestor killed and 25 protestors and police wounded in Tripoli, Lebanon.

Clashes following protests in Tunisia outside US embassy in Tunis. Three people killed, 28 injured.

86 arrested in attack on US consulate in Chennai, India.

2,000 people protesting in Amman, Jordan.
