Since last weekend, at least three people have been killed near Grasberg, a gold and copper mine owned by US giant Freeport in Papua. One of them -- Drew Grant -- was an Australian technician. He was shot dead by unknown attackers on Saturday. The Indonesian authorities have blamed separatist rebels for the attacks but these have denied the allegations. In the past, rights activists have accused the Indonesian security forces of orchestrating violence to justify their presence in the region. They are supposedly there to protect the miners.
